Malaria is a serious, sometimes fatal disease, spread in over 100 countries by the infected Anolpheles mosquito.  Approximately 2,000 travellers return annually to the UK with Malaria. In 2005 there were 11 deaths in the UK from Malaria.

What type of anti-Malarial drugs you will need, indeed whether you will need them at all,  depends on several factors including the specific area you will be visiting, the weather and the time of year. Anyone visiting a malarious area can become infected, whatever their age and ethnic background.  Malaria can kill very quickly if not diagnosed promptly. It is particularly important to understand that there several strains of Malaria, and that taking the wrong type of medication for the strain to be encountered remains one of the major causes of Malarial infection amongst British travellers.
